REAL LIVING WAGE A GOOD FIRST STEP, ‘BUT STILL A LOT MORE’ TO DO FOR CARERS IN WALES SAYS GMB UNION
The union for care workers welcomed a statement in the Senedd from the Deputy Minister for Social Services that all care staff in Wales would receive the real living wage, but the Union believes that more needs to be done, repeating calls for fifteen pounds per hour for ‘hard-pressed care staff’, and not a penny less.
Kelly Andrews, GMB Senior Organiser said:
“Today’s announcement is extremely welcome, but it’s not the end of the story.
“The real living wage is a big step forward which will start to make a difference for hard-pressed carers, but there’s still so much more to do.
“Social care workers are highly skilled but will remain undervalued in the current system, one that needs to fundamentally change.
“Our hard-pressed carers deserve £15 an hour, and not a penny less.
“So there’s a lot more to do, and we look forward to continue working with Welsh government to fix this broken system and get care staff every penny they deserve.”
