In 2025 visitors to Nantclwyd y Dre can experience the history of this charming higgledy-piggledy timber-framed townhouse not only through its sight and sound but also smell!

Adding to the period costumes, soundscapes, and activities introduced last year, the historic house and gardens has introduced immersive aromas in each of its period rooms, bringing over 500 years of history to life in a new, captivating way.

Crafted by AromaPrime, creators of speciality aromas for museums and tourist attractions, the scents offer a new way to experience the past, transporting visitors through the centuries as they encounter the rich smoky aroma of tallow candles in the medieval room, fruit punch in the Parlour, biscuits in the Edwardian room and delicate roses in the Georgian bedroom.

The sensory addition enhances the already fascinating journey through this historic attraction, offering visitors a deeper connection to the daily life of the families who have lived here throughout the ages; from fresh bread in the kitchen to the nostalgic scent of an open coal fire, each room now tells its story not just through its sights and sounds, but also through smell.

Councillor Emrys Wynne, Lead Member for Welsh Language, Culture and Heritage said:

“The use of scent in museum and heritage setting is nothing new, but what has increased is our understanding of how the sense of smell is the one most linked to emotion and memory.

“Imagine using your sense of smell to relive the past. I urge everyone to come and see (and smell!) what it’s all about.”

Visitors are invited to experience the story of Nantclwyd y Dre in this new way, Thursday – Saturday, 10.30am to 4.30pm (last entry at 3.30pm), until 30 September 2025.
