Almost 4,900 residents of Bridgend County Borough have applied for the new winter fuel payment following its launch by Welsh Government last week.

Designed to support eligible households with the cost of heating their homes throughout the winter, the scheme provides applicants with a one-off £100 payment and forms part of a £38m initiative which is being rolled out across Wales.

The scheme is open to households where someone is claiming universal benefit, income support, working tax credits, means-tested welfare benefits, income-related jobseeker’s allowance or employment and support allowance.

The one-off payment is provided irrespective of whether fuel is paid for on a pre-payment meter, by direct debit or via a quarterly bill.

Applications can be made online through the council’s ‘My Account’ facility – to create an account, simply complete the online form and provide a valid email address.

The Deputy Leader, Cllr Hywel Williams said: “The winter fuel support scheme offers households who may be struggling throughout the ongoing pandemic a helping hand, and ensures that everyone can stay safe and warm this winter.

“To take advantage of the scheme, visit the council website and follow the instructions on submitting an application, but make sure you do so before the deadline of 18 February 2022.”
