Nolton Street in Bridgend town centre remains closed to traffic this morning (Thursday 16 April) following a fire at a vacant three-storey commercial property.

The building, which is privately owned and is not maintained by the council, will be inspected by structural engineers later today.

A decision will then be made on whether it is safe to reopen the road.

South Wales Fire and Rescue crews from Bridgend, Pencoed and Kenfig Hill attended the scene to tackle the blaze, which has caused significant damage to the building.

Cllr Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities, said:

“I’m grateful to the emergency services for their swift response.

“Anyone with a valid reason not to be at home as per the Government restrictions on movement should avoid the area and use an alternative route until we can determine whether it is safe to reopen the road.”
