During April of 2023, Ruthin Gaol has welcomed over 1400 visitors through its historic doors, double the figures for April 2019, which were the last pre COVID and pre flood figures available.

A very busy Easter period, as well as hosting Ruthin Artisan Market within the grounds at the end of the month helped see the significant boost in numbers.

The Gaol reopened on April 1st after two years of flood renovation works took place. The basement of the Gaol has now been restored, revealing the magnificence of the original brickwork, giving visitors a truly unique and atmospheric experience. Some of the outside spaces of the Gaol have also been developed, allowing visitors to explore more of the historic site.

A new cell has also been developed, telling the story of the prisoners who were transported to Australia from Ruthin Gaol.

Philippa Jones, Heritage Site Operations and Development Manager said:

“We are over the moon to see such high numbers come through our doors within the first month of reopening. We look forward to the rest of the season and hope to continue on our good start. The Gaol is open every day, except Tuesdays and is a truly unique experience for all of the family. We are also dog friendly!”

Councillor Emrys Wynne, Lead Member for Welsh Language, Culture & Heritage said:

“I am delighted to see that over 1400 people have decided to come and support the Gaol after its reopening. It is a real treasure that we are very lucky to have on our doorstep.

I would urge anyone who is interested in local history to visit as it is a truly intriguing site”.
