Salvation Army Opens New Donation Centre in Cardiff, Promoting Sustainability and Community Support

Cardiff residents now have a new place to shop, donate, and give back to the community as The Salvation Army opens its latest donation centre on Colchester Avenue today (March 18). The centre aims to provide affordable goods while encouraging sustainability through upcycling and repurposing.
A Hub for Affordable and Sustainable Shopping
The new donation centre will feature a wide range of items, including furniture, homeware, fashion, and electrical goods, all at budget-friendly prices. The initiative aligns with The Salvation Army’s commitment to reducing waste and promoting reuse at a local level.
Nicola Crawford, Director of Retail for the Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion into Cardiff:
“Our donation centres are all about community and affordability. Each centre offers a large shopping area filled with quality second-hand items, ensuring that we repurpose locally—including larger furniture and white goods. What truly makes these centres special is their deep-rooted connection to the communities they serve.”
The Colchester Avenue location also provides easy access and parking, making it convenient for residents to donate items or browse for bargains.
Strengthening Community Support Amid the Cost-of-Living Crisis
This marks the 57th donation centre opened by The Salvation Army since the initiative began in 2016. The centres play a crucial role in supporting individuals facing financial hardship by providing quality goods at reduced prices. Additionally, all profits generated from sales go toward the charity’s broader social initiatives, including support for older people, children, families, and those experiencing homelessness.
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Roberts, leader of The Salvation Army in Wales, emphasized the importance of these centres:
“Many people are familiar with our charity shops, but these larger donation centres allow us to receive and sell a greater variety of goods. The generosity of donors has been incredible, and the affordability of these items is especially appreciated during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.”
Opportunities for Volunteering and Community Involvement
Beyond being a retail space, the new donation centre will also serve as a hub for community involvement, offering volunteering opportunities for those looking to give back. Volunteers will play a key role in running the centre, assisting with donations, and supporting customers.
The centre will be open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM, providing a welcoming space for the Cardiff community to shop sustainably while supporting a charitable cause.
