One of the two main routes between England and Wales, the M48,  had to be temporarily closed this morning after an unnamed 20-something man scaled the bridge to fly his drone, according to reports.

A Police spokesman said:

“Officers attended the M48 Severn Bridge at 8.10am this morning after concerns were raised for a man who appeared to have climbed one of the towers and was flying a drone off it.

“The man, aged in his 20s, came down from the tower voluntarily and has since been arrested for causing a public nuisance.”

The M4 bridge is exclusive to vehicles, however whilst the old Severn Bridge is crossed by the M48 it also has a pedestrian and cycle route which goes over both sides of the giant structure.

Police were forced to stop traffic across the M48 bridge while the incident was resolved to ensure the man’s safety.  Highways England expressed concern that “a person has put their life at serious risk” but assured the public there was appropriate security in place.  Their spokesman said:

“The incident was quickly spotted on our security cameras and reported to police and thankfully there was no injury or worse on this occasion,” it said.

“Appropriate security is in place on the bridge, we are liaising with Avon and Somerset Police and will be undertaking investigations to determine if any damage was caused during the incident.”

Today’s disruption is likely to add fuel to existing calls for drones to be licensed.
