As we are hurtling towards summer and the promise of warmer weather, it’s time to think about jewellery and the pieces to pair with our summer outfits. With the sales of bright and bold jewellery rising at the end of 2021, it may come as no surprise that big and bold is also on the cards for 2022.

Why we like to wear Jewellery

Many of us wear jewellery in one form or another, whether that’s a wristwatch or a pair of earrings, but the art of wearing jewellery goes back to prehistoric times. Jewellery, even from an early date has been worn for several reasons, most notably, as a symbol of status or rank and as a protection from the dangers of life. In modern society, we carry forward some of these ancient traditions. The wearing of wedding rings to symbolise a couple’s commitment to each other through marriage dates back to ancient Egyptians and is still practised today. Luxury jewellery also has an association with wealth and good fortune in modern society. Gifting a diamond necklace to a loved one, for example, is a symbol of love and affection, elevated through the precious stone. There are many reasons we enjoy wearing jewellery today, from expressionism to sentimental reminders.

How Jewellery trends change over time

As with fashion, jewellery trends change and develop through the years. The 1920s saw the rise in jewelled headwear often accompanied by pearl or diamond necklaces and square set rings. Although precious stones and metals were still popular in the 1960s, the decade was all about being bright and bold with colour. Jewellery in the 60s was often made with plastic and non-precious materials such as glass. Stack bangles of varying colours were worn on the wrist whilst necklaces were layered too, often made from beads. In contrast, the 1990s saw a rise in silver jewellery and choker necklaces reached a peak in popularity. Male jewellery was also on the rise in the 90s.

Trends to look out for this summer

Now it’s time to take a look at what is proving popular in 2022.

  • Body Jewellery and body chains are a new addition to the 2022 beach wardrobe. Why not pair with a bikini or crop top this summer for added statement, opt for a delicate chain for a subtle sparkle.
  • Dazzling Chokers – the choker is making a revival but this time, with added sparkle. Big bold chokers with added diamonte are the perfect way to add a statement to your outfit.
  • Colourful Enamels – colour remains popular, from vibrant blues to popping pinks, enamel jewellery is fantastic for really making an outfit pop, especially when you have an array of colours to choose from.
  • Chunky Gold Chains – Although dainty gold chains have been a popular piece for a while, this year, designers are taking it up a notch with chunky gold chains, allowing people to create a powerful look as they emerge into a post covid world.

Whether you opt for a classical jewellery style or try something new this season, enjoy experimenting with different combinations and seeing your jewellery bring an outfit to life.
