Today Cardiff woke up to find Superman’s iconic cape had landed in the Welsh capital.
Unveiled in The Red Dragon Centre, Cardiff joined four other cities in hosting a larger-than-life Superman mural at as part of an epic nationwide trail.
Designed to celebrate the release of James Gunn’s Superman, arriving in UK cinemas July 11, each of the nine murals allows fans to step into Superman’s iconic red boots. With his cape billowing behind, the interactive artwork offers a one-of-a-kind superhero photo opportunity.
Dubbed ‘Citycapes’, the installations aim for a collective cultural moment across the 5 cities, with each artwork inviting Superman fans to step into the red boots of the Man of Steel, with his cape billowing heroically behind them.
The Cardiff artworks appeared overnight on Hill Street and inside the Red Dragon Centre in Cardiff Bay as part of a UK and Ireland-wide superhero-themed street art campaign.
The artists behind the work were Tom Sledmore and Hassan Kamil for the Hill Street display, and Ryan Stuart and Kyle Hill for The Red Dragon Centre’s mural.
Designed as a public photo-opportunity and street art installation in one, the murals reflect the bold new look of James Gunn’s Superman, blending comic book energy with real-world scale. Some of the murals even include a guest appearance from Krypto the Superdog, allowing fans of all ages to interact with Superman’s most loyal companion.
In addition, each mural has a unique QR code to scan, giving visitors a chance to win an exclusive private screening of the eagerly awaited Superman, in the locations the artworks are live.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said ‘We are proud to be chosen as one of just five cities in the UK to host this cultural fan experience. The interactive artwork will give Superman fans old and new the chance to capture an ‘out of this world’ moment with friends and family whilst visiting the city.”
