Swansea University alumnus Dr Daniel Bassey has been selected as a global finalist in the British Council Study UK Alumni Awards 2021.

These prestigious awards honour individuals who are leaders in their fields and have used their experience studying at a UK university to positively contribute to their communities, industries, and countries.

Dr Bassey has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Professional Achievement category, which recognises UK alumni who have distinguished themselves through exemplary leadership and achievements in their professional industry, demonstrating the impact of their accomplishments in their profession and beyond.

Since completing his MSc in Public Health and Health Promotion in 2013, Dr Bassey has worked to strengthen health systems worldwide and assisted with conflict and humanitarian emergencies.

During the Ebola outbreak of 2014-16, Dr Bassey acted as a Health Project Manager and later partnered with a local non-governmental organisation to provide customised 3D limbs to neglected casualties of the Yemen War. Dr Bassey was also Co-President of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), a Nobel Prize-winning organisation that advocates for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

On his experience studying in the UK, Dr Bassey said: “My studies gave me a worldwide view and equipped me with strategies that I was able to use throughout my career.

“I strongly recommend studying in the UK; you can’t get any better.”

Professor Judith Lamie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Swansea University, said: “This is an exceptional achievement for Dr Bassey, and we wish him the very best of luck in the upcoming finals.

“We are incredibly proud of Dr Bassey’s work and delighted that the British Council has chosen to recognise him in the Study UK Alumni Awards.

“Dr Bassey’s shortlisting is a testament to his hard work and the quality of degrees available at Swansea University.

“We hope to see many more graduates applying in the future.”
