Unusual Pets That You Can Safely Keep At Home

We should never forget the fact that we are not alone in this world, we coexist with many other living beings. There are many more other animals out there than house kitties, dogs, and pigeons. These animals sure are nice, everyone loves them, but we should also spread this love to other animals. Visiting a zoo is a nice way to give an homage to such animals if they are treated properly there.

One way you can know for certain they are getting good care is if they are with you. That does not mean that just because you can keep it will make the animal happy. You can put a horse inside your house, but the horse will not be happily trapped in there. This is why it is important to see which animals you can keep home, for both you and their sake.

Here is a short list of some of these unusual pets that you can legally keep at home – provided of course, you have the space, resources and experience to meet their needs

Snakes

Everyone knows about the big snakes like the python and venomous snakes such as the black mamba. However, there are many other snakes that are not like these vicious predators. You can keep these kinds of snakes as pets safely inside your home. Of course, it is better not to have them free roam around, but they will not pose a threat to you or others around you. One of the most popular snakes is the ringneck snake, known for its elegance and beauty.

You will not be able to find an herbivorous snake, but you can find others that eat much smaller prey. There are also other snakes that are even smaller that also do not cause any harm. Some intentionally look scary like a venomous snake, but that is all for shows, so predators can stay away.

Caracal

If you have a big house with a large garden you can close off, a caracal can be a dream for cat lovers. These medium-sized cats do require space, but they also want your love and really like to play. It is best to adopt them when they are kittens, so they can get used to you, like any other kitten. These cats do get the zoomies quite often, so they are great if you like such interactive cats.  However, they aren’t suitable for every home and if you want to own a caracal as a pet in the United Kingdom, you will need to hold a Dangerous Wild Animal license  – not easy to obtain.

Lobster

Lobsters are usually viewed as a delicacy in any restaurant or high-end grocery store. However, you would be surprised to see that lobsters make excellent pets. They are pretty chonky, very smart, and they live for about 50 years. They develop a beautiful color if you keep them healthy, which is not very hard to do. You only need to provide them with a big tank and make sure to maintain it properly like with any other sea creature.

Capybara

Capybaras are the most chill animals out there, there is no doubt about that. You can keep them as a pet, and they will not mind it, especially if they can mingle with other pets. Capybaras have been spotted hanging out with the craziest of animals such as alligators and bears without flinching. You will need to provide them with a pool because they really like to chill in the water. While they make great pets, you will need a licence provided by your local council to certify that your property and gardens are suitable for a Capybara to live in.

Axolotl

An axolotl is quite an exotic animal and one that is also pretty safe to keep at home. With a nice tank that is kept out of the sun and kept somewhere between 14 to 20 degrees celsius, you can keep them. Feeding them with earthworms or small fish is not hard to do, and there you go. They are pretty entertaining to watch and quite unique. By keeping an axolotl as a pet, you are helping them evade extinction due to the changing weather and human activities.

There are a lot of animals out there, and while some make great pets, not all of them do.   As with any pet, make sure that you know about it’s lifespan, it’s dietary needs and it’s habitat and make sure that you can provide them in a domestic setting- research is even more important if you plan on keeping an unusual pet.  It’s also important to only buy ANY pet through a trusted, licenced source and if you really want to learn more, why not ask your nearest zoo or wildlife facility if you can volunteer to learn more before buying.
