UWTSD Men’s Rugby Secures Historic Double!

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) Men’s Rugby 1st XV has celebrated an unforgettable season by clinching both the Western Shield and the Western Tier 4 league title. Completing an unbeaten campaign, the team dominated their six league matches, scoring an impressive 394 points while conceding only 50. They finished ahead of Hartpury, their closest rivals, and edged them out 34-31 in the tightly fought final at Bath University.
Under the strong leadership of captain Ben James, the team delivered key performances throughout the season. A pivotal away victory against Royal Agricultural University set the tone for their championship run, with experienced third-year players Dafydd Jones and Cian Trevelyan playing crucial roles in avenging a narrow defeat in Cirencester the previous season.
One of the standout stories of the season was Will James, who completed his university rugby career having played in every match over the past three years. Another defining moment came in the cup campaign’s semi-final, where UWTSD faced a tough test against Cardiff University. With scrum-half Noah Potter and Number 8 Iestyn Wood delivering man-of-the-match performances, the team secured a hard-fought second-half victory.
The season also marked the debut of two Scarlets Academy players in the UWTSD squad. Ellis Payne showcased his attacking ability against the University of the West of England, while Tiaan Sparrow scored a decisive try in the home win over Hartpury. Additionally, the university took great pride in second-year student Harri Thomas, who played a key role in the Wales U20 Six Nations campaign, including a standout performance against England in the final match.
UWTSD Rugby continues to foster strong relationships with local clubs, including Super Rugby Cymru sides Carmarthen Quins and Llandovery. Six university players have represented these teams over the past year, highlighting the success of this partnership. Standout fly-half Sam Potter was rewarded for top performances at both UWTSD and Ammanford RFC by securing a place in the Dragons Academy.
Beyond the players, UWTSD Rugby thrives thanks to its dedicated support team. BSc Sports & Exercise Therapy students Joanna Cathersides and Ffion Jones were instrumental in providing high-level medical care throughout the season. The collaboration between the Students’ Union, university clubs, and the Academy of Sport has also been vital in the team’s continued success in BUCS competitions.
Head of UWTSD Rugby, Gareth Potter said:
“To complete the double was just reward for a very tight group of individuals who have worked tirelessly throughout the season. The first year students have added further quality to the squad and the skill and physical development programmes which we run alongside our partner clubs are key in the development of these youngsters. The rugby programme here is developing nicely and gives the boys an opportunity to experience BUCS rugby as well as playing with their home clubs. Special thanks from myself to all the backroom staff for their dedication and support. We look forward to welcoming more new students in September to help with next season’s campaign in the higher league.”
Lee Tregoning, Head of the UWTSD Academy of Sport, echoed these sentiments: “Massive congratulations to everyone involved. The squad’s commitment has been exceptional, and it’s fantastic to see both Carmarthen and Swansea-based students fully embracing the rugby culture Gareth has built. We look forward to building on this success and further establishing UWTSD as a premier destination for aspiring rugby players who want to train and compete in a professional environment while earning a top-quality education.”
