Wales ranked in the TOP 10 regions in the UK to start a remote business – but Gloucester named the best overall

The expert analysts at Dojo, part of the Paymentsense brand, created a new study to find out  which city in the UK is the best place to turn lockdown hobbies into a successful side hustle and the results reveal the top city is Gloucester.

With the public stuck at home for the best part of a year, many have turned to hobbies to keep themselves entertained. However, some entrepreneurs have turned their hobbies into a business and with the near future looking to favour remote working Dojo wanted to see which city would give them a head start.

Dojo analysed the following criteria to assess which city in the UK has the best working conditions to start a side hustle:

  • Population – Number of people are living in the city
  • 5-year start-up survival rate – % of start-up businesses that last longer than 5 years
  • Internet Accessibility  – % of population with access to the internet within the city
  • Income  – Average pay for full-time workers
  • Unemployment Rate  – % population of the city that is unemployed
  • Post Offices – Number of post offices in each city

From the 10 regions analysed Wales ranked the eighth best region to start a remote business in the UK.

Swansea ranked BEST city to start a remote business in Wales!

Bradford is ranked as the best place to start a remote business in Yorkshire and the Humber with a total index score of 146 out of 252. This Welsh city has one of the highest average weekly pay for full-time workers out of all the UK regions examined, sitting at £542!

With the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment standing at £581.43 and an average broadband speed of 62MB, self-starters could be on track to turn their bedroom into a business.

Cardiff comes in second place, closely followed by Newport 

Cardiff comes in third place with an index score of 125 points and closely followed by Newport in fourth with 123. Even though these neighbouring cities an unemployment rate of 4.6%, they differ when it comes down to broadband speed, as Cardiff has a speed of 46MB as opposed to Newport with 34MB.
