With the current inflation going around in the world, people have been trying their best to cut down some of their costs to support their goals of achieving a specific savings amount. One of the main reasons why a normal middle-class family’s costs are going up is the rising cost of electricity bills.

Cutting back on how much electricity a family uses can have a huge effect on their monthly outgoings. One way to do so is to approach an energy billing solution to help you calculate precise billing and provide you with money-saving packages.

In addition to going to these kinds of service providers, you can also try out some tips and tricks at home and at work to lower your electricity bills. What practices should you follow? Let’s discuss some of those practices in this article.

Laundry the right way

No matter how energy-efficient a washing machine is, it still ends up consuming a lot more energy than you would want it to consume. However, there are some ways that you could practice while doing your laundry to cut down the appliance’s electricity consumption.

  • The first and foremost thing that may increase the cost washing your laundry is not running full loads of laundry. Members of a house can pool their laundry together to wash full loads. This would be about one spin of laundry per week, if not more. Statistics show that by following this practice, you could save up to £25 a year.
  • The biggest misconception that most people have about washing their laundry is that using hotter water will be more effective at killing the germs off their clothing. In addition to shrinking your clothes, hot water will not be able to kill the germs as effectively as the dryer of your machine would do. Additionally, using hot water will heat the motor of the machine which will increase the electricity consumption, hence adding many units to your monthly bill.
  • Last but not the least, is to throw a dry towel in your tumble dryer while running the machine. This is because the towel will soak up any extra moisture left by the washing machine, thereby reducing the drying time. The shorter the period of time a dryer runs, the more you cut down your electricity costs.

Increase your refrigerator’s temperature

Have you ever experienced reaching out for a soft stick of butter and getting a frozen stick from the back end of your fridge? This could be due to the fact that your refrigerator may be set to a much cooler temperature than is needed for your food to remain fresh. Setting the refrigerator at a lower temperature will not only freeze some of your foods but will also consume more electricity. thus increasing your electricity bill. Hence, to cut down some of the amounts, tweak the knob of your fridge to a certain degree; for example, keep it between 35°C and 37°C.

Unplug the devices when not in use

You probably remember being told in your younger years to switch off devices when not in use. This practice undoubtedly saves energy consumption, prevents a dent in your wallet, and, most importantly, helps save the environment. But have you thought about unplugging the devices when they’re not in use as well as turning them off? If not, then you should start practicing it immediately.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that you could save around £40 a year by turning off devices you’re not using because the appliance continues to use electricity on standby power. Every device you unplug can save you £40 per year and some energy at the same time.

Try not to use heavy-duty machinery during peak hours

Heavy-duty machines that use heat like irons, fan heaters, washing machines and tumble dryers consume a lot of energy, which could add a significant amount to your electricity bill. You can make savings by running these machines during off-peak hours.  Check if your tariff rewards users with lower off peak tariffs, and if so, do your laundry overnight.

Your electricity bill should have a table that mentions the time slots in which the electricity meter runs normally and charges less than the hours in which it runs much faster, i.e., charges more. When the meter is running normally, avoid using heavy usage devices and wait for the discounted times where possible.  It’s also worth noting that charging laptops, phones and other devices during off-peak hours will also cut down on your monthly electricity bill by a significant amount.
