The Welsh Liberal Democrats have today called for urgent action to safeguard the future of Wales’ steel industry following the announcement by former US President Donald Trump that he plans to impose a 25% import tariff on all steel and aluminium entering the United States.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Westminster Spokesperson David Chadwick MP condemned the proposed tariff, warning of its potential impact on an already fragile industry.

“The UK Government must act to protect what is left of the Welsh steel industry,” said Chadwick. “After the Conservatives left the Welsh steel industry to the wolves, the last thing we need is for what remains to be destabilized even further.”

The announcement has sparked fears of economic repercussions for steel producers in Wales, who already face challenges from global competition, high energy costs, and uncertainty following Brexit. Welsh steel exports to the US play a significant role in sustaining local jobs and communities, making the proposed tariff a direct threat to the livelihoods of thousands of workers.

In response to this growing concern, Chadwick has urged the UK Government and the newly elected Labour administration to take decisive action, including convening a Four Nations Summit to coordinate a united response.

“The Labour Government must hold a four nations summit to coordinate action to protect jobs and livelihoods from any further cuts,” he continued. “Preserving what remains of our domestic steel industry is vital for both national security and the Welsh economy.”

The Welsh Liberal Democrats are calling for immediate steps to be taken, including diplomatic negotiations with the US administration to seek exemptions for UK steel exports, additional support for affected businesses, and increased investment in modernizing Welsh steel production to enhance its global competitiveness.

“The importance of the steel industry cannot be overstated. It is a pillar of Wales’ economy, a provider of high-skilled jobs, and a key component of our national security,” Chadwick concluded. “This tariff cannot go unchallenged, and we need a government that will stand up for Welsh industry.”

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats will continue to advocate for measures to protect Welsh steelworkers and ensure that the industry remains a viable force in the UK’s economic landscape.”
