A recent NESCAFÉ survey has unveiled fascinating insights into the sensory preferences of people across Wales, revealing their top choices for flavours and scents, and highlighting interesting differences compared to the rest of the UK.

While sweet flavours remain the most popular across the UK, with 38% of people naming it their favourite, Wales shows a slightly lower preference, with 34% of Welsh respondents opting for sweet. Savoury flavours follow closely behind, with 31% of people in Wales choosing it as their top flavour – compared to 27% nationally.

When it comes to scent, 30% of people in Wales named the smell of freshly washed clothes as their favourite, reflecting a national trend that sees the scent popular among younger generations. However, Welsh respondents diverge slightly when it comes to food-related aromas: freshly baked goods are the top choice in Wales, with 25% of people placing it at the top of their list, emphasizing the nation’s love for comforting, homey smells.

Nationally, the most popular scent overall is flowers and grass, selected by 23% of the UK public. Yet in Wales, the pull of baked goods and fresh laundry takes precedence, painting a picture of a region that favours the familiar and the comforting.

These findings come as part of NESCAFÉ’s broader exploration into how tastes and scents influence emotions, which aligns with the launch of new NESCAFÉ Gold Blend flavours – Rich Caramel and Smooth Vanilla.

“Our survey highlights the UK’s deep affection for sweet sensations, with vanilla emerging as a top aroma, particularly in regions like Greater London and the West Midlands.” says Ingrid Hayes, Marketing Director of Nescafé Soluble Coffee.

“We’re thrilled to introduce our new NESCAFÉ Gold Blend flavours – vanilla and caramel. These additions to the Gold Blend range not only enhance the sensory experience but also provide a comforting and indulgent option for coffee lovers. They are designed to delight British taste buds and evoke the cherished memories and emotions that only great flavours can.”
