Wrexham’s fairytale rise has shown no signs of slowing down these past three seasons. Back-to-back-to-back promotions has seen the club’s historic rise from non-league to the Championship in double-quick time. Now they’re just one step away from the money-spinning paradise that is the Premier League.

Their 3–0 win over Charlton capped off a remarkable League One campaign last time out, with Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney celebrating another milestone. Since their 2020 takeover, Wrexham has defied expectations time and time again.

However, the Championship is a different beast entirely. Tougher opposition. Tighter margins. Far less room for error. With these points in mind, there’s just one question to answer: Can Wrexham pull off an unprecedented fourth promotion on the spin and make the leap to the top-flight?

Can Wrexham Make It Four in a Row?

After storming through the lower leagues, Wrexham now face one of the toughest challenges in football: gaining promotion from the Championship.

The second tier is a step up in every way. Budget. Squad depth. Physicality. General ability. Yes, The Red Dragons may have defied expectations before. However, the odds for a fourth promotion – particularly straight away – are far less favourable this time around.

While Championship football odds for the 2025–26 season haven’t rolled in fully yet – after all, the playoffs are still taking place at the time of writing – early assumptions can be made about Wrexham’s chances. The problem is that, with it being so early where incomings and outgoings are yet to start, those assumptions are all over the place.

Most see Wrexham landing mid-table. Others see them as playoff contenders and even potentially landing in one of the two automatic promotion spaces. At the other end of the scale, relegation is also being considered by those who feel the jump to the Championship is too much. That places Wrexham firmly in the unpredictable middle. They’re generally seen as too strong for immediate relegation, but also not quite fancied for a genuine title charge.

The Championship has humbled plenty of clubs with momentum on their side. Sides like Ipswich and Luton have shown that it’s possible to rise quickly, but the jump in quality is steep. Wrexham won’t be able to dominate games as they’ve done in the lower leagues. The club has a winning culture and support system that believes, giving them confidence entering the new season.

What Will It Take?

If Wrexham are serious about chasing a fourth straight promotion, they’ll need to make smart decisions – both on and off the pitch. Here are some key points they must cover:

  • Strengthen the spine: A few players have thrived through Wrexham’s rise. At this level, however, it will be vital for the club to add proven Championship quality. A commanding centre-back, midfield general, and 15-goal striker would be a solid start – although getting any of these is easier said than done.
  • Keep the core intact: Loyalty has been a theme of Wrexham’s success. Retaining the best players who’ve adapted at every level gives them a strong foundation. That said, they must also recognise when fresh competition is necessary in key positions.
  • Upgrade rotation: The 46-game season is nothing new for Wrexham, but the club still needs to be prepared for fatigue and injuries. It’s necessary for them to build a larger, fitter, and more versatile squad to cope with the grind of the Championship.
  • Use the transfer window wisely: They can’t outspend the biggest clubs in the league. Yet, Wrexham still has plenty in the bank and can attract talent. The club’s visibility and positive atmosphere could support their efforts to sign experienced players seeking a unique challenge.
  • Embrace the challenge: Wrexham’s mentality has been key so far. They’ve handled the pressure and shown belief when it mattered. That same fearlessness could help them embrace the challenge and succeed in the league.

Wrexham are now playing among relative giants, although recent years have shown that they’re not afraid of big moments. Promotion is a long shot, yes, but you can’t count them out yet.
