Wrexham village pub gets quizzy for good causes
A popular Wrexham pub is gearing up for a series of quiz-based events that will help raise hundreds of pounds for local good causes.
The Golden Lion in Rossett will be hosting numerous events in its famous Scandinavian-style tipi throughout November and December, taking the fundraising total for the year to around £3,000.
The first event is a hotpot supper and quiz on Wednesday 6 November raising money for Rossett Food Cupboard and local Church, which provides food to local people when they need it and helps to cut down on food waste. The event is run by local resident Lesley Bennett, who holds regular coffee mornings at the pub to raise additional funds.
Another quiz will be hosted on Sunday 17 November in support of Hope House Hospice’s ‘Quality Moments Matter’ campaign. The quiz has some great prizes up for grabs including a £100 voucher top prize and the total amount raised on the evening will be boosted by match funding.
The tipi is also the place to be on Friday 22 November when the Golden Lion’s popular ‘Big Fat Music Quiz’ returns in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. The evening will include live music throughout and has been organised by a pub regular who has battled prostate cancer this year.
A Christmas-themed charity night in recognition of pub regular and tireless fundraiser Terry Colley will be held on Friday 13 December. Terry retired from hosting charity nights this year and the event aims to celebrate his fundraising efforts over the past 30 years and continue his achievements for future years, with all proceeds going to Hope House Hospice.
The final fundraising quiz also in aid of Hope House Hospice will be held on Sunday 29 December. Now in its fifth year, the Golden Lion’s ‘Big Fat Quiz of the Year’ is always a sell-out and is a fun way to fill the gap between Christmas and New Year.
Earlier this year, the pub hosted its ‘Live at the Lion’ festival which attracted thousands of visitors who enjoyed 15 acts over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Allan Parrington, general manager at The Golden Lion since 2009, has established the Hydes-owned pub as a real community hub for the people of Rossett and surrounding areas.
Allan, who also doubles at the village Father Christmas and chairman of the village community council, the Village Hall, as well as running The Golden Lion, said: “We’ve had a very busy year in the fundraising front and it’s not over yet! We’ve got lots of quizzes organised in the run-up to Christmas and the local community really gets behind everything we organise. We couldn’t ask for a more supportive community and it’s great that the pub is the focus for lots of the events.
“Everyone at The Golden Lion loves being at the heart of village activity whenever it can and we’re looking forward to rounding off this year in style with a big push supporting some great local causes. As a team, we’re also grateful for the ongoing support and encouragement from Hydes.”
Managing director of Hydes Brewery, Adam Mayers said: “The Golden Lion is the very definition of a community pub. As a popular and busy pub, it really does play a vital role in the community and has helped to raise thousands for charity over the years, thanks to the generosity of regulars and visiting customers.
“Hydes is fully committed to all of the pubs across its estate and community-focussed events such as the programme run by The Golden Lion, helps our pubs to stand out from the crowd.”
Hydes, with its brewery in Media City, Salford, was formed in 1863 and supplies beers to wholesalers, pub companies and other brewers throughout the UK and a pub retailing estate of over 50 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
