In our fast-paced modern world, many people struggle with feelings of stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness. Over time, we’ve learnt to be more open about our feelings and seek help, but many people still don’t know how to look after their mental well-being and reduce their risk of developing these common mental health issues. If you’re wondering how you can take better care of your mental health, then keep on reading to discover five helpful mental well-being tips.

Redecorate

Nowadays, more people than ever are working from home. This shift has had many benefits, including a greater work-life balance and the ability to work flexibly, but it has also meant that people are more likely to be stuck in their homes all day. This can lead to loneliness and a feeling of being trapped.

To improve your mental well-being when you’re at home, you could try setting aside specific areas for work and rest – having a separate area where you work will help you switch off at the end of the day when you leave this space. You could also try redecorating. Repainting the walls a more vibrant colour or getting some house plants could definitely lift your mood, and hanging up some beautiful canvas prints of your family, friends or favourite places will cheer you up when you’re feeling down.

Exercise

It’s been proven that exercise can reduce stress and improve your overall mood. This is because exercise makes your body release endorphins, which make you feel happier. Exercise can also improve cognitive function and help you sleep better, and if you join a sports club, you could make some new friends to combat loneliness too.

Sleep more

It’s tempting to push back your bedtime to get some more work done or watch another episode of your favourite TV show, but this isn’t doing your mental or physical health any favours. Getting enough sleep (around 7-8 hours per night) will make you feel more energized and less stressed throughout the day, so don’t underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep.

Connect with others

Loneliness is something that we all experience but no one talks about. However, loneliness can have a huge impact on your mental health, as people who experience loneliness are much more likely to develop issues such as anxiety and depression. Therefore, it’s important to connect with others, whether you want to make new friends or reach out to old ones. Try joining a local group or club related to one of your hobbies, or use an app like Meetup or Bumble BFF to make friends online.

Practise mindfulness

Practising mindfulness is all about bringing yourself back to the present moment and focusing on all of the sensations around you. As a result, it can help you stop worrying about the future or the past. Try practising mindfulness for a few minutes each day to help you appreciate the present.

Unfortunately, mental health issues are continuing to become more and more common. Follow these helpful tips to protect your mental well-being and reduce your risk of developing conditions like anxiety and depression. However, if you feel like your mental health is severely deteriorating, make sure you talk to a doctor.
