Following a fantastic public response to this year’s RHS Flower Show Cardiff appearance with feature garden, Gardd Lles (Well-being Garden), the National Botanic Garden of Wales will be hosting a whole weekend of activities promoting gardens and gardening for health and well-being this Bank Holiday (May 25th – 27th).

The ‘Well-being Garden Weekend’ plans to showcase the garden as a place of well-being with a variety of talks, workshops, walks and stalls for all to enjoy.

Themes across the weekend, which will be jam-packed with activities for all ages, include the ‘Science of Well-being’ – highlighting the work going on to improve the well-being of people living and working in Wales – ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’; focusing on the different ways individuals can concentrate on their own mental health and also physical well-being and the impact a healthy lifestyle can have on a healthy state of mind.

Activities include talks from reptile specialist and BBC broadcaster, Dr Rhys Jones, as well as the British Bird of Prey Centre who will be introducing the Eagle Reintroduction Wales Project.  Naissance will also be running workshops on how to make natural remedies and cosmetics.

Community coaches from both the Ospreys and Scarlets will be on site; the Ospreys providing workshops on the mental health related elements within professional sport and the Scarlets running rugby skills sessions for children, and a touch rugby match aiming to get both teenagers and adults involved.

Other highlights include circus skills with Swansea-based youth charity Circus Eruption, ukulele and samba drumming sessions with Music and the Muse, ‘Reading to Owls’ – one-to-one sessions where youngsters will get the opportunity to read their favourite book to an owl – creative writing, and also herbal tea brewing in the Growing Future Garden.

Speaking about the event, Faye Watson from the National Botanic Garden of Wales said:

“We had a fantastic response to our well-being garden at the RHS Show and we wanted to do something more to build on this and highlight some of the things we can all do to protect our own mental well-being.

“There really will be something for all ages to enjoy and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone who comes along to what promises to be a great weekend.”
