Howzat! First Class cricket at the Gnoll for a second year running!
THE LEADER of Neath Port Talbot Council, Cllr Steve Hunt, has congratulated Neath Cricket Club for attracting senior Glamorgan cricket matches to its Gnoll Ground for the second year running.
The ground played host to two games, Glamorgan versus Lancashire and Glamorgan versus Hampshire at the Gnoll last Summer – and this year there are two more attractive games to look forward to.
On Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, Glamorgan are due to take on Durham at the Gnoll and two days later the county will face Warwickshire in Neath – both games are part of the Royal London One Day Cup.
Neath Cricket Club was formed in 1848 and from 1871 the ground at The Gnoll, Neath, was shared with Neath RFC.
Glamorgan first played at the venue in the 1930s and it soon proved popular with both players and spectators.
The first record of cricket in Neath dates back to the mid-1840s and in 1848 a cricket club was formed, based at The Gnoll. The ground staged its inaugural first-class fixture against Essex in 1934 and a series of annual games were subsequently staged by Glamorgan at The Gnoll until 1973.
Cllr Hunt said: ““Well done to the team at Neath Cricket Club for keeping up high standards at the behind their success in attracting first class cricket to the Gnoll Ground.
“The games – weather permitting – will bring big crowds into the centre of Neath which is bustling thanks to the new town centre Neath Leisure Centre and library which have both proved really popular since opening earlier this year.”
